美國影藝學院 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences，
於 1927 年，由當時的電影業知名人士成立。
目標是在推動電影藝術與科學的發展，促進業內合作。
1929 年，影藝學院為表彰電影業傑出貢獻人士，設立了... Academy Awards (學院獎)。
由該組織每年舉辦，並負責提名、票選，與頒獎。

1934 年 (第六屆) 頒獎典禮後，
好萊塢的專欄作家 Sidney Skolsky，首度使用 "奧斯卡" 來稱呼獎座。
(據說，是因為小金人長得很像某工作人員的叔淑 Oscar)
一開始雖僅是玩笑性質，
但正式的名稱 "學院獎"，實在太過嚴肅、無趣，
於是，大家也都有樣學樣，漸漸改稱... The Oscars (奧斯卡金像獎)。
2013 年起，這已成為美國影藝學院註冊的正式名稱。
