滾石雜誌 Rolling Stone，由 Jann Wenner 和 Ralph J. Gleason 創刊於 1967 年 (舊金山)。
當時，是披頭四最當紅時期，
也是流行音樂開始取代古典樂、爵士樂，成為主流的轉捩點。

"Rolling Stone" 這個名稱，取材自 Muddy Waters (1913 - 1983)，1950 年的藍調歌曲 "Rollin' Stone"。
而且，不僅滾石雜誌...
1962 年成立的英國搖滾樂團 The Rolling Stones 的名字，也是源自於此。
隨著滾石樂團、滾石雜誌的長期走紅，
"Rolling Stone" 已經成為流行音樂的代名詞。

但各種音樂又互相影響、融合，
例如 : Michael Jackson 結合 Funk、Disco、Soul、Rock、R&B 的音樂，到底應該算哪一類 ?!
目前，除了爵士樂比較能獨立外，
很多時候，已經不太容易區分了。
除非你特別偏好、專注於某一類，
簡單的把它們都視為 "流行音樂" 亦無不可。

盡力避免沾染商業、政治色彩，因而深具公信力。
歷經多年的專業經營，已經成為全球最重要的流行音樂指標，
在流行樂界的權威性與影響力，無庸置疑。
